Bauer Resources and logistics service provider Rhenus have opened a soil treatment centre in the city of Duisburg in western Germany.
The centre, located in the city’s port in a former warehouse storage area, will increase both companies’ capacities to professionally dispose of mineral waste.
The new centre can treat around 85,000t of non-hazardous and hazardous waste per year. As much as 8,000t of material can be stored and treated in its 3,000m2 hall.
The hall features a sliding roof on the port basin side. This enables waste to be directly transported from the centre onto ships and trains, thereby reducing the number of trucks used in moving the waste.
Bauer Resources head of disposal in the west region Manuela Evers said: "This trimodal connection, in other words access with truck, train and also ship via the port, reduces transport costs and contributes to a reduction in transport-associated CO2 emissions."
The hall also meets high safety standards. The waste storage area is completely enclosed to protect the surrounding area and the adjacent Rhine River from the waste materials being processed.
Steel elements have been welded into the base of the hall walls to ensure that substance leakage is completely prevented.
During the waste handling process special mist cannons are used to bind the dust together. It then goes through mechanical processes such as screening or crushing. This allows the production of specific grain sizes for reuse in the economic cycle, but also allows polluted fine particles to be sieved out.
The process used in the centre not only conserves resources but also reduces strain on limited landfill space.
Evers added: "Disposal safety as well as protection of the environment and resources are both very important to us.”
The centre will also enable Bauer to move its operations closer to its clients in western Germany.
